Liberia: Remnant Of AmericaLiberia was formed in 1822 by a settlement of freed American slaves, and in 1847, had established its own republic. William Tubman, the first President of Liberia, worked hard to promote foreign relations and try and make friends with the local people. In about 1980, a civil war broke out, causing any economical growth to be destroyed, and the war finally concluded in only about 2003 in which Ellen Johnson Sirleaf came to power, trying to slowly grow its tattered economy with a small amount of success. Liberia in Latin means "free". The Capital, Monrovia was named after President James Monroe, who officially created Liberia
